The Bar Harbor Ferry Terminal was built in the mid-1950s by Maine Port Authority to support the service between Bar Harbor, ME and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Ferry service ceased to operate to the facility in 2009, and in 2019 the Town of Bar Harbor acquired the site and its associated waterfront infrastructure.
To provide the town with a baseline understanding of conditions and potential for facility re-use, GEI performed an above and underwater inspection of the pier, a drone survey for upland topography and high-resolution imagery, and a hydrographic survey of the pier area. GEI then completed a condition assessment and structural evaluation, and prepared recommendations for short- and long-term repairs to the facility with priorities and cost estimates. To support the Town’s planning for future redevelopment, conceptual plans were then prepared for development of a new marina at the site with various levels of re-purposing and reuse of existing structures.
GEI has been working closely with the Town on a second phase of the project, the development of a master plan for the former ferry terminal property.
