Portrait of Chris Stransky

Chris Stransky is a senior aquatic scientist in GEI’s Carlsbad, California office. In Mr. Stransky’s previous role as a Vice President and Senior Scientist, he was a group leader for an Aquatic Sciences and Toxicology specialty and Director of the Toxicology Laboratory which he designed and built with his team. Chris has more than 30 years of experience leading a wide variety of monitoring and reporting programs in support of regulatory compliance in southern California. He has a passion for leading teams to characterize the health of aquatic environments, understand causes of impairment where identified, and develop viable cost effective remedial solutions and more effective monitoring techniques. Chris has supported a wide range of environmental compliance, biological community assessment, and public outreach programs for the Ports of San Diego, Long Beach, and Los Angeles under as-needed contracts for over 20 years.

Chris’ expertise centers on toxicology with specialized emphasis on assessment of water and sediment quality impacts to beneficial uses, the use of multiple lines of evidence including the State of California Sediment Quality Objectives (SQOs), toxicity identification and toxicity reduction evaluations (TIEs/TREs), harmful algal blooms (HABs), and development of site-specific water quality criteria. A number of the innovative projects led by Chris have resulted in positive changes in several state-wide policies, individual NPDES permits, Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), and regional monitoring programs, as well as the publication of a number of peer-reviewed journal and news articles.

Chris is a well-known expert in the environmental field and currently serves as the President of the North America Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Boz Life Science Research and Teaching Institute affiliated with the University of California San Diego (UCSD).
